David’s Hope Pro2 / Mavic XM819 wheels
Red Hope Pro2 hubs with a 20mm front axle laced to the fantastic Mavic XM819 rims. The XM819 used to be billed as an XC rim but at 520grams it’s too porky for this purpose – luckily it’s super stiff and very durable so it works well on all-mountain or freeride bikes and is UST-compatible.
Red spoke nipples were used to add some colour. The XM819 rims need longer than usual nipples to make sure that the nipple doesn’t get lost if a spoke is removed…luckily I had a bag of 14mm Sapim nipples which fit the bill perfectly.

I’m a little confused…these rims are not rated at 560g, they’re 450g…solidly in the XC range.

Typo sorry – it should read 520g. Rim weights vary a lot due to the extrusions process; the lightest 819 I’ve had is 500g, the heaviest 562g…most tend to be 518g to 525g. 450g is Mavic’s claimed weight but this is very optimistic and does not include the weight of the nipple carriers which are needed.
The XM-819 is very stiff and they build up very true – as such I think this rim works really well as an ‘All Mountain’ or light weight freeride bikes but it’s a bit too strong and heavy to be used as an XC rim like it was originally designed for and marketed as.
If you are looking for a lighter rim then take a look at the Stan’s ZTR Arch which is generally around 420g, has similar dimensions to the XM-819 and is 100g lighter per rim.
