Dan’s DuraAce 7900, CX-Ray, Kinlin XR-270 racing wheels
Building dedicated race wheels is great but I get the biggest kick out of putting together a pair of wheels which is fast enough for club racing yet durable enough for daily training use.
Dan is a big, powerful fella with a background competing at the highest levels of NZ road cycling and he needed a pair of wheels suitable for logging some serious training kms and competing at club level.
The new DuraAce 7900 hubs were our choice for price, weight and durability reasons. I laced these to the Kinlin XR-270 rims with bladed Sapim CX-Ray spokes. Dan muscles the front of the bike around so he needed something stiff and these wheels should fit the bill nicely.

Hi Tristan,
The wheel looks nice. Wondering what is the spoke length? It looks like both front and back are 2X laced, is it?
Thanks,

Hi Fei
Yes both wheels are 28x2mm.
I used the following spokes (cut to perfect length on my Morizumi)
Front: 282.5mm
Rear: 281.5mm / 279.0mm
If you’re using boxed spokes I’d suggest 284mm front (or 283mm if you can get them) and 282 / 280mm for the rear.
Cheers, Tristan

Hi Tristan,
Thanks for the info.
Yes, I have to use boxed spokes as I don’t have any proper tool to cut it. I’m thinkg using ST Swiss revolution for front and competion for rear. What is your opinion in compare DT spoke with CX- Ray you’ve used for Dan’s wheelset?

Depending on your weight the Competitions will be overkill for the rear wheel, although using them on the driveside will make building much easier as they don’t wind up as much as the Revos.
The XR-270 rims are really stiff so if you’re under 80kg then no worries using Revolution on both sides.

Thanks Tristan, really appriciate your info.
What do you think if I do radial lace for the front wheel? I’m under 70Kg.

Radial would be fine but there is no real need – it stiffens the front wheel radially (because of the slightly shorter spokes) but with 28h the wheel is plenty stiff anyway. Personally I think radial looks good on 20 and 24h wheels but a bit cluttered on 28h. Up to you :-)

Thanks Tristan.
My front wheel is 24H. I think it looks better. Any dowside on radial lace?

Nope! Where did you find 24h DuraAce 7900 hubs? I’ve been trying to get some and although they’re listed as being produced I couldn’t find anyone with them.

Hi Tristan,
I bought the DA 7900 hubs from Chain Reaction Cycles. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=28443
They still have in stock.

Hi got this email and photos from Fei

“Hi Tristan,
Thanks for all the help. After few days struggle, I’ve finally
finished my wheel. total weight is 1580g. I used VeloPlug instead of
Rim Tape, which saved me 30g. As suggested, I did radial in front and
2 cross at rear. DT Swiss Revolution spokes used.
Tried about 10km, feels OK.
