Pauls Reynolds carbon clinchers and White Ind H3 hubs
I rebuilt a pair of Reynolds Strike 66mm deep carbon rims onto a pair of White Industries H3 hubs. The original Reynolds hubs were heavy and cheap but the main problem was that Paul needed some extra lateral stiffness.
The new hubs are lighter and have wider flanges for better lateral stiffness. The front and non-driveside rear spokes are bladed DT Swiss Aerolites, the driveside spokes are DT Swiss Competitions. Lateral stiffness increased 20% for the front wheel and 25% for the rear wheel with this rebuild.

Lol,
It’s a strange coincidence, I have built on Sunday a wheelset with a different kind of spoke on the drive side and the non drive side.
I could find it here : http://velo-trainer.fr/spip.php?article70
However, I place the CNSpoke DB 454 (equivalent of the DT competition) on the NDS and the blatted aero 424 on the DS.
This wheelset is a prototype, I build it in order to see if the fact of using stiff spokes on the NDS could help to increase the global stiffness of the rear wheel. I assume that it reduce the deformation when a torque is apply on the right side of the wheel.
What is your opinion of this Tristan?
Best,
Cédric

Hi Cedric
Using a heavier spoke on one side of the wheel will certainly increase the lateral stiffness. I think the results will be better if the thicker spoke is on the NDS however I always put them on the DS. Using lighter, flexier spokes on the NDS means that it has stretched more under tension and is therefore less likely to go slack under side-load. With the stiffer spoke on the NDS this is more likely to occur.
Also, from an aerodynamic point of view I think the NDS sees much ‘cleaner’ air than the DS so the bladed spokes are positioned where they would help the most.
I would be interested in hearing how your experiment goes though! Do you have a way of measuring the wheel’s stiffness or are you just going by feel?
