After a long week at work I was pretty tired and the horrible weather on Friday night made the idea of staying in bed much more appealing than waking at 6:15am on a Saturday but I woke with the alarm and after an espresso I loaded up the car and headed to pick up the others. Mike and Andy both looked how I felt: heavy eyelids and a look of apprehension.

We traveled up to Whangaui in the Falcon. The traffic at this time of the morning was non-existent and Friday’s rain and wind had given way to clear blue skies and views of the snow-capped Tauruas.

A few hours later we passed through Whanganui and arrived at the race course to find a very technical descent (with a railway crossing in the middle) followed by a punchy 1km climb about 2km before the finish line. The technical descent added to my apprehension but I liked the idea of a half-descent climb within a stones throw of the finish and I made a mental note to get to the front of the bunch for the descent.

We registered and were issued the most amazing race numbers: they were thick, heavy material with hand-written numbers and were so wide that they wrapped around to the front of the jersey! No digital timing tags here.

We had plenty of time so we jumped back in the car and drove the course: A flat start, fast downhill, then a bit lumpy before heading back on State Highway 3 with two decent climbs before turning off the main road into the technical descent, 1km climb, and flat to the finishline. In B grade I’d have to do 4 laps of this course for a total of 90km, Mike and Andy in A grade would have to do 5 laps for a total of 112km.

I was riding the wide Velocity A23 wheels with DT Swiss hubs – these aren’t as fast as carbon race wheels but the road-holding and amazing feel of these wheels has made them my favorites to ride.

I found the pace from the start to be comfortable so I stayed near the front and lapped out in the thought that a break would form. One guy made repeated attacks off the front but wasn’t able to make anything stick and no one wanted to go with him.

I had no problems on the two climbs on SH3 and each lap I made sure to be near the front of the group for the descents. The descent over the train tracks was a lot of fun with great traction in the corners and I found myself really looking forward to this descent on each lap, plus it put me in a good position for the 1km climb which followed. The climb was steep enough to suit my strengths and was too long for the powerful riders to take advantage.

Any New Zealand race isn’t complete without interference from the local livestock and on lap 3 we were stopped by the cows crossing the road on their way to milking. A couple of lucky guys who had been dropped on the climb managed to get back on and no one seems to complain about having a rest for a couple of minutes.

On the final lap Kerry jumped clear on the first climb. I let him go and expected the bunch to work together to bring him back, but this wasn’t the case and he quickly left us behind. On the second climb I upped the pace hoping to split the bunch or have someone go with me, but near the top I glanced back to see I was 50 meters off the front of the bunch and alone. Figuring I’d get caught on the flat section I sat up and went back to the bunch.

The pace was reasonably quick along the flat section into the descent and I entered it in first wheel. This put me in a good position at the base of the final climb and a group of three of us broke clear of the group. We worked well together over the top of the climb and managed to catch Kerry with about 600m to go. Going into the final straight I was in last wheel which was the perfect position. It was a head wind combined with a slightly uphill finishline and I knew I had to wait and go late. Two of the guys infront bumped together quite hard and I didn’t want to crash so when they bumped together for a second time I jumped to the right side of the road and went early for the sprint. I went too early though and could only muster 3rd.

In the A grade Joe Cooper solo’d off the front and finished with about 1 min over the remnants of the bunch.

Andy had a stunning sprint through the bunch which was reminiscent of Robbie McEwen’s darting and diving and managed to finish 4th for the sprint and 5th overall – an awesome job considering the quality of the field. Mike rolled in a minute behind the front bunch for 11th place of the 25 strong field.

We loaded up the car and after prize giving headed for a kebab at Jabies in Bulls to spend the prize money. We talked trash the whole drive home and by the time I’d dropped the boys off, unloaded the car and jumped in the shower it was 9:45pm – certainly a long day!

Team BP in the 2010 Tour of Wellington

Paul O’Connell

– Invictus –

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

– William Ernest H`enley

When I woke up this morning my neck hurt. I was supposed to be riding but my neck hurt, and I used to live by the old adage of “never train while sick or injured”. Then it started to rain, and I also live by the rule of thumb of “I don’t like getting wet” (a little less meaningful and serious I know).

But unlike days past, those things weren’t foremost in my thoughts.

When I saw the rain this morning I was worried about the boys. Today was the last day of the Tour of Wellington, and the weather had closed in.

How is Mike going to cope in this rain? He’s already had one lie down . . . really . . . . pissing rain on the last day for the criterium race? 60km/h through city streets in weather like this?

My perspective had shifted. If it hadn’t been for yesterday, I wouldn’t have seen today in the same light. The grey mist that is coming around Point Jerningham now signifies more than my inability to ride, now it’s about misery and danger for the boys on their last day.

Was that too abrupt?

How about some context?
_________________________________

Team Sky – the newest addition to the Pro Cycling Peloton have team issue Apple Iphones and Macbooks. They’ve got massage chairs with calf supports. They’ve got a state of the art team bus with washing machines that work while the bus is on the road. The bus has a full height shower and mood lighting designed by sports psychologists.

They’ve got team cars by Jaguar. They ride Pinarello Dogmas. And for those of you who don’t know cycling – Pinarello is to cycling as Ferrari is to driving – overblown, Italian, pornographic, and astonishingly beautiful.

The team is staffed by the best sports scientists the British Olympic programme has produced, and the riders are world champions and Olympic champions.

Veritable rock stars of cycling – Juan Antonio Flecha, Bradley Wiggins, Geraint Thomas, Ben Swift, Matt Hayman, Chris Sutton – even New Zealand’s own Greg Henderson.

But I don’t care one iota about those boys riding in the rain. It doesn’t bother me one little bit if they’re putting themselves in danger – those guys are paid handsomely for it, they’re appropriately cared for and they love getting out amongst it.

This morning I’m concerned for Team BP in the 2010 Tour of Wellington.

The Tour of Wellington is a UCI ranked event that attracts lower level pro teams and has been won by such cycling luminaries as Robbie McEwen (3 time Green Jersey winner in the Tour de France – 12 stage wins) and Travis Meyer (current Australian Road Race Champion and rising star).

Sure, it is a local race and not on a European scale by any definition, but the racing is hard, the organisation is professional and the teams come from all over and mean business.

At the same time, it’s the heartland of New Zealand elite cycling. This is where the guys you ride with on a Sunday go to lay it on the line.

And yesterday I rode with Team BP.

No magnificent team bus, no soigneurs, no psychologists, no team website . . . no financial support at all. These are guys with full time jobs who train and race in their spare time.

Team BP is all about the love of the sport, the camaraderie, and – though they wouldn’t tell you – a glowing testament to man’s indomitable spirit.

Team BP don’t have a bus, they’ve got an EA Falcon station wagon with a $400 car alarm.

“A $400 car alarm?” I say, looking around the car wondering why in the hell you’d bother to put a $400 alarm in such a car.

“Yeah,” says Tristan, “the car only cost $400 . . . ain’t no one going to bother stealing it.”

They don’t have individual rooms at the Copthorne Hotel, they’re sharing two rooms at the Acorn Motel just down the road.

No one goes out to buy coffee, they’ve got a plunger that someone brought from home. Making coffee? . . . that’s Tristan’s job, or Jonno’s job, or Andy’s job. There are no real roles – whoever needs the next cup of coffee puts the plunger on.

The staffing is similarly democratic. Tristan is sporting director, technical director, team mechanic, driver, communications liaison, public relations executive, and team manager.

Christine (Jonno’s girlfriend) is assistant sporting director (because she happens to be there), the interloper writer (me) is in charge of water bottles in the back seat, Kirsten (Andy’s girlfriend) is in charge of sports psychology (also known as leaning out the window at 60 k an hour cheering on the boys), and Jim and Annette are the catering division (Andy’s parents who graciously put on a magnificent picnic at the end of stage 4. I was half expecting to see them with oranges at the top of the climb, but it wasn’t to be).
_________________________________

When I arrived at the motel on Saturday morning Andy and Mike were up and reading the paper. Tristan had just finished a cup of coffee (and was later to drink mine), and everyone was sitting watching Country Calendar. I was told I’d just missed the dog trials.

The atmosphere was calm and relaxed, very much laid back New Zealand with a hint of weariness. I ride with Andy most weeks, and this morning I could see the miles he’d done in the past few days written on his face.

It had been a hard week. Mike had gone down hard on the first day and broke his bike, he was now sitting reading the newspaper and bleeding through his dressings.

Andy had performed beautifully the day before – beating NZ road champion Jack Bauer home by more than 5 minutes.

Dan was quietly confident, quiet being the operative word. Jonno was smiling and ready. And Chris was, as we were about to find out, nearing the limit of his not inconsiderable power.

After rising and slowly coming back to life, the first thing on the agenda was the team manager’s briefing. As water bottle guy and general interloper I was invited along. Tristan and I rolled off in the second team car (which was my Toyota) to the Copthorne to be read chapter and verse on the feeding protocols and what to do with biddins (I’m pretty sure he meant bidon, but he said biddin and who was I to correct him?)

This inspirational speech, followed by the didactic speech from the Police escort, provided heady material for the Team Manager’s motivational speech when we got back to the motel.

I can’t remember the precise details of the tirade, but I’m pretty sure it was something along the lines of “this is the bit where I make a motivational speech” and then someone laughed. It was beautifully missing all necessary elements to make it a tirade.

It was okay though, the strategy had been formed while we were at the managers’ briefing – Tristan hadn’t been brought into the fold but the boys already had a plan.

“We’ve got a strategy for today,” Mike grinned at me. “Get into a break. Any break. We want to see if Tristan’s car can actually get past the peloton.”

Once a break forms and is established in a cycle race (which usually means a gap of about a minute between it and the main field), the race directors bring the team cars of those riders in the break past the peloton and up behind the break.

Team BP hadn’t been in a break so far, and the aim of the game today was to try and get into one. Not for TV coverage, not for prize money, just to see if the EA Falcon could actually get past the peloton. Not that it was short of horses (in fact it had so many horses it almost ran out of gas on one stage), but that it was a rather wide car. Would there be room on narrow NZ roads for almost100 cyclists and the mighty EA station wagon?

That was it. The plan for the day. “How well can Tristan drive the beast?” I thought it was a great plan. And with that we headed for the start line.

Piling into the EA Falcon we quickly took our pre-assigned roles. Christine was in the front seat with Tristan and was in charge of the Mallowpuffs. Tristan was both team manager and driver, and had race radio expertly duct taped to the dashboard.

I was in the back with Kirsten. We had 5 spare wheels in the back behind us and I had instructions on what to do in case of a puncture (grab a wheel, give it to Tristan, get the hell out of the way. . . good instructions).

I was also in charge of water bottles on the right side of the car, while Kirsten was in charge of water bottles on the left and all motivational cheering.

The race today was three laps of a 33k circuit about 20km outside of Masterton. We were number 17 in the caravan, meaning there were five team cars behind us as well as the ambulances that follow the race, the broom wagon, and the Police car that marks the tail of the caravan.

The back seat was carefully organised with bottles, bananas, muesli bars, coke, and my bag and laptop and camera rudely intruding.

As we headed out of town I found a strange sense of calm descended upon us . . . there were moments of panic in the next three hours, but they were only passing, and what was happening in the race was largely unknown to us.

Race radio updates would let us know what was happening in the breaks as they went, and we could see the gaps from our place in the caravan as the field rounded corners ahead of us. But we weren’t concerned about the leaders and the attacks as they came, we spent most of our time looking at the peloton trying to figure out if that rider that was falling back to the cars was a BP rider. Most of the time it wasn’t, but on three occasions it was.

My abiding memories of race radio are from the more absurd moments in the race.

The indisputable evidence that we were racing in New Zealand:

“Attention Tour Radio, there is a tractor on the road ahead.”

And the technological failure:

“<unintelligible>

“I can’t understand a word you’re saying, use the official radio”

The first time we saw one of our guys it was the tragedy of the day. Chris had been suffering after three days of hard racing, and when the field attacked on the second time up the climb he started to drift off the back.

As he fell back all of our thoughts and concerns went with him. We couldn’t do anything, but he was suffering and that’s who we were worried about.

Chris being Chris, he never gave up all day. Fifteen minutes later he was sitting behind the mighty EA Falcon, still there at the edge of endurance, grinding trying to get back through the caravan of team cars to the main field.

Our sports psychologist was leaning out of one window shouting words of encouragement, and I was leaning out the other taking photos.

It was so tantalisingly close. Just as we thought he was about to make it back on, the field attacked for an intermediate sprint prize and the elastic broke.

As he fell back beyond the Police car marking the end of the caravan, our hearts fell.

Chris was now out there alone with a 60 km time trial ahead of him to get home and make the time cut – a not inconsiderable task considering he had a full lap of the circuit to get through and then a slog into the rising headwind to deal with.

We didn’t know it at the time, but the rest of the boys were feeling pretty good. At the end of the second time up the climb Dan and Mike were sitting on the front of the peloton lapping it out.

Mike was bleeding down his left leg onto his socks, his road rash from day one sunburnt from the day’s previous stage (the perils of transparent wound dressings).

As the marketing schtick goes: Pain is temporary, glory is forever.

These are guys with full time jobs, one of them cut up pretty bad, and here they were sitting on the front of a semi-professional peloton driving it into a crosswind.

They were working for no particular reason as far as I could tell – it’s just what cyclists do. You want to live with the big boys, then take a turn at the front.

Dan was rather sheepish about it afterwards . . . those turns on the front were followed three quarters of a lap later with him falling back off the field as it attacked up the climb the last time around. But he’d done his work and was heading home with a few other guys who’d also been dropped as the peloton turned things up to bring the break in.

Just before Dan drifted off the back, Jonno came back for bottles. Given what he was going through, and how ham fisted I was with the first bottle hand off, he was incredibly gracious.

I couldn’t believe it – we were driving at about 50 km/h, I was a rank amateur using my memory of having seen team directors do this on TV, he had to be working pretty hard . . . and he was still smiling.

He loaded up with about 6 bottles and then he was off back to the race.

And that was effectively the end of the race for the Team BP support crew. We had been there just in case, we’d done what little we could for Chris when he was ‘in the box’, we’d gotten bottles when needed, and we hadn’t rear ended anyone.

(Another team behind us couldn’t say the same – we heard the crunch as one car rear ended another early on in the race but never followed up to find out what actually happened. I’m pretty sure it was a Mercedes. Thankfully they didn’t hit the EA – it was freshly washed and polished after all).

The false war was over, save any possible punctures we were done and heading for home. We’d even eaten all the Mallowpuffs. (we made a pact not to tell the boys, a pact which I broke within about half an hour).

At this stage the break was at 30 seconds and with 20km to go it really had no hope at all of surviving. The commentators at the finish line were saying otherwise to gee up the crowd, but we could see the peloton sitting up and watching it. And if the peloton can sit up and the break doesn’t move further out, then it’s in trouble when the work starts.

We were more concerned about being at the finish line with food and coke for the guys than we were with the outcome of the race. Our guys were there in the mix, we had to be there to feed them afterwards.

By the time we got to the right side of the community hall at the finish line Mike, Andy and Jonno were already there.

Not only there, but to my utter shock and amazement they were in good spirits. Smiling and laughing and telling stories. Mike was bleeding down his left leg onto his shoes, trying to decide what flavour ice cream to get today.

“Maybe goody goody gum drops. Or boysenberry even. There’s this real fruit ice cream place on the way back to Wellington, they make this great boysenberry ice cream where they actually mash up boysenberries . . .”

“You have an ice cream after every stage?” I asked, absolutely delighted at the beauty of it all.

“Yeah, I figure it’s got the right balance of carbs, fat and protein,” he said, grinning.

“What did you have on Monday?” Christine asked.

“Hokey Pokey – It’s New Zealand’s favourite flavour of ice cream don’t you know?”

We all laughed. It was perfect, Mike was still smiling and telling stories of his favourite ice cream flavours while his wounds were dripping onto his cycle kit.

Good spirits. Immense fitness. All in the love of the sport.

It’s hard to explain why we ride to those who don’t ride.

Mike and Jono and Dan standing around chewing the fat and signing autographs for a local cycling fan (aged six). Sure – he got the autograph of the yellow jersey holder, but not before he’d come to have his programme signed by the boys from Team BP.

Back at the Acorn motel the catering division – Andy’s parents – had put on what could only be described as a magnificent spread.

On the wonderful sunny summer’s afternoon we all sat around, listened to the boys’ stories and squinted through sunstruck eyes trying to see photos on my laptop.

There was still one day’s racing ahead, but right then it was all about the ham and egg sandwiches and the shared stories.

Stories that you have to share over a beer while sitting in the pool at the Acorn motel.

I’ve always thought that Becks was an isotonic sports recovery drink, and it’s often my beverage of choice after the Sunday morning gladiatorial outing on the bike. Little did I know that Jonno shared my theory.

With all the boiled eggs gone, and the beer consumed, it was time to load up and head back to Wellington in preparation for Stage 5.

Team BP wasn’t staying the night at the Copthorne and getting a bus transfer over the next morning with all the other teams. Family cars were filled to overflowing, and the mighty Falcon even managed to make room for a race official’s bike. I offered to carry gear back, but it was all sorted.

The boys would spend the night in their own beds, and Tristan would even manage to get out the next morning for the Sunday bunch ride. (I didn’t, I was sitting writing this and worrying about the rain).

And while it wasn’t all about competition, the boys did well in stage 4. They moved up another place on the overall Team Classification which took them up ahead of teams with far more support and fanfare.

Team BP. The men in the arena. Their faces marred with sweat, and one of them bleeding from his arm and leg. Smiling through it all, and then back to work on Monday morning.

Postscript: Stage 5 of the Tour – a criterium race in central Wellington – was cancelled for safety reasons.

An exhibition race of half length was held in its place, with prize money still on offer and participation optional.

The race was won by New Zealand National Road Champion Jack Bauer. Team BP was represented by Chris.

Day 3 of the Tour of Wellington was a 165km stage from Masterton to Pahiatua and back. With only 5 seconds between Michael Torkler in the yellow jersey and second place, and another 12 riders within 2 minutes of leading the race we knew this was going to be a fast stage.

The close time gaps meant there were plenty of teams trying to launch a rider up the road for a break, and plenty of other teams wanting to prevent loosing position by allowing a break to form and the result was a fast race from the gun.

This stage was the most exciting to watch from the team car as attack after attack tried to break free of the peleton. Each attack would be covered by the peleton and as soon as it was brought back another rider would counter-attack and try again, and the first hour of racing covered 42km – not bad considering the 5km neutral start, the headwind, and this part of the course being gradually uphill!

The first 60km were ridden single-file as the elastic stretched in the peleton. After 60km, as water bottles were running low, the pace eased a little and teams started feeding from the cars, but as soon as everyone had a drink the pace was lifted and again the peleton formed a long, single-file line.

Our boys are better climbers than they are timetrialists and they all did exceptionally well to withstand the high pace and finish with the bunch.

Stage 2 of the Tour of Wellington led the boys over 127 kilometers of the Wairapa countryside including the nasty Limeworks climb and finishing at the top of the 12km Admiral Hill.

The pace from the gun was high and the first hour of racing the boys had covered more than 41km…impressive when you remember the first 5 km was under neutral! Early breaks were trying to get away but the bunch wouldn’t let them and the first 60km flew by.

The heat was taking it’s toll and we were called up a few times in the team car to provide water for our riders. All of the boys were going well and they handled the high pace and stayed really calm.

The bunch stayed together until Limeworks – this was the first big climb of the day and those with an eye on GC took the opportunity to tighten the screws.

After a hair-raising descent back to the valley floor the last climb up Admiral Hill began. Our guys climbed really well and Andy was the first of our team across the line about 6 minutes down on the stage winner, Michael Tockler.

Tomorrow is a long 165km stage up to Pahaitua – it’s going to be fast but after a wicked spagbol for dinner the boys will be ready :-)

Today was the first stage of the men’ s Tour of Wellington – I’m managing team BP consisting of Mike, Daniel, Jono, Andy and Chris. For the first time in many years the race started in Lower Hutt and headed over the Rimutakas.

The race was neutralized until the base of Kaitoke and within a few minutes of the flag dropping the attacks started. The pace up the Rimutakas was high and within minutes riders were popping off the back.

Drapac Porsche were responsible for most of the pace setting and managed to get two riders clear of the bunch by the 555m crest of the climb leaving a small peleton behind them followed by small groups of strung-out riders.

Descending the Rimutakas was a thrilling experience from inside the team car. The riders who had been dropped on the climb were intent on catching the peleton and were descending with serious speed. The road was closed to all traffic so riders (and team cars) were taking up the whole width of the road in an attempt to get down as quickly as possible. It was absolutely awesome to see riders hitting 80kph down the twisty, traffic-free road.

Back on the flat and heading towards Martinbough most of the peleton was together with Andy, Mike and Daniel all making the cut. Chris and Jono had descended like mad-men but were unable to get back on and ended up in the large groupetto.

On the way along Longbush I saw one of the service vans behind one of my riders, Mike. Mike had been nudged, touched wheels, and had gone down quite hard. I jumped out of the car and took over from the neutral mechanic who was doing an atrocious job of trying to straighten his handlebars. I quickly got the handlebars sorted, duct-taped Mike’s shoe to repair the broken strap, and jumped back in the car to pace him back into the race. About a kilometer down the road, and doing 60kph behind the car, his back tyre flatted with enough of a pop that I could hear it from inside the car. After a quick wheel replacement we were back at 60kph but not for long as the second big climb of the day started. Mike was still a long way behind the peleton and he did an amazing job to ride himself back into the race over the next few kilometers.

Drapac Porsche were at it again with two of their riders setting a blistering pace up the climb and getting a lead of 30 seconds at the top. The 90kph descent led to some rolling hills where the race needed to be stopped because of sheep on the road. Only in New Zealand :-)

With the sheep cleared the race restarted and before long we passed the 20km to go kite. Drapac riders Peter McDonald and Norris Lachlan were still clear of the bunch and were working well together until one of the final climbs which saw Lachlan return to the bunch. McDonald’s lead was only 22 seconds by this point but he managed to time-trial the final 15km solo. The bunch chased and lost a lot of riders in doing so, but couldnt catch him and Lachlan finished a few seconds clear.

All the boys finished safely – Andy was the highest finisher at 7 minutes back. Mike crossed the line and announced that his frame was broken – apparently at 90kph down Limeworks hill it didn’t feel quite right and closer inspection showed two large cracks on his seatstay.

Back at the hotel, and with a spare bike for Mike found, I went about swapping his cranks, pedals, seatpost / seat and wheels across and gluing a new tubular to his wheel. We got really lucky – the replacement bike was the same model Avanti Quantum in a 1.5cm smaller size so with a longer stem the fit and geometry will be very similar.

After a great rosoto for dinner (thanks Andy) the boys all hit the hay leaving me to rinse and fill the waterbottles for tomorrow and sit down with a glass of vino.

The latest issue of New Zealand Mountain Biker magazine has a write-up of an interesting pair of wheels I built using Hope Pro2 hubs with custom polished centers, light weight DT Swiss Revolution spokes, and Stan’s ZTR Arch rims.

The rear wheel is dishless, meaning that the rim is centered between the two hub flanges. On a normal hub this isn’t the case because the cassette body pushes the driveside flange in towards the centerline of the wheel. The result of the wide, symmetrical flanges of the Hope Pro2 Singlespeed hub is a huge improvement in wheel stiffness compared to a normal ‘geared’ hub. Normally the Pro2 can accept 6 cogs on it’s short freehub body, a nod to it’s heritage as a trials-specific hub and the old requirement for 26″ bikes to have 6 functional gears. By mounting the freehub body in the lathe and removing some steel from the back of the freehub I fitted 7 cogs from an XT cassette giving a 13/32 ratio.

Why? Personally I’ve run only 7 or 8 gears on my rear wheels for years – by moving the cassette outwards the chainline in the middle chainring is greatly improved for climbing in the middle ring and I find that I don’t miss the two smallest cogs unless I’m riding long distances on the road. By squeezing these 7 cogs onto the Pro2 SS hub the wheel has the advantage of better chainline as well as a huge increase in lateral stiffness.

Both hubs had their centers polished to match the silver spokes and some custom Wheelworks decals applied. The front wheel can be set up for 9mm quick release, QR15 or 20mm thru-axle forks.

This wheelset is designed for aggressive cross country / all-mountain / light freeride and weighed a total of 1705 grams (the magazine typo’d and said 1800) which is incredibly light for a wheelset of this stiffness and durability. A lighter version for cross-country could be built using the lighter 355 or Crest rim.

The guys at the magazine really understood the purpose of the wheels and were impressed by them -

I wasn’t thinking ‘my current factory-built 28 spoke wheelset is flexing a bit and makes for a slightly vague ride’ until I tried this wheelset. The difference in feeling is striking and I can see big benifits for big or aggressive riders.

The magazine is in all good bookstores now.

Well first graded road race was a good new experience. Race started at a nice sedate pace which I was pretty stoked with. If this is all I had to do as a roadie it was going to be an easy day. Regretfully about 10k in we took a turn and were struck by a strong crosswind so some of the heavies went to the front and drilled it. This left me in serious trouble just holding the wheel in front of me. Now from thinking I was in for a cruisey day I had begun to contemplate how painful it could be. Thankfully for me the pace settled down and I managed to sneakily loiter around at the back of the bunch and do as little as possible. I think most people were a bit intimidated by the hills to come.

For the next while quite a few little solo breaks tried to go up the road but these always seemed doomed to failure with the full bunch behind so I never gave them a second thought. In my attempt to make my proper road racing debut as successful as possible I had studied the course profile and noted that it was mainly flat until about halfway. Therefore at about halfway I stopped loitering and slowly made my way towards the front end of the bunch. On a small riser a small split started to form in the bunch, being towards the front and nice and attentive I quickly leaped across the gap to safety. This split came to nothing pretty quickly but at least it made me feel good about my attentiveness.

The race started in earnest when we finally hit a decent hill with Alex Revell animating the race. He lit it up on the first decent hill and left everyone including me scrambling up the road after him. I was in trouble but managed to slowly drift back through the mangled bunch and join back on the downhill. On the next hill that same tactic didn’t work for me again because there was no downhill. I tried my hardest to rejoin with a group of three but blew myself to pieces only to have a larger group of 5 or 6 steam past to rejoin leaving me out the back with one other guy. We managed to sit about 300m off the back of the bunch for about 10k to Kurau hill. Frustratingly close yet agonizingly far away. Kurau was a horrid hill, it went straight up with a strong headwind. I must have been reduced to a cadence of about 40 and zig zagging up part of the hill. I managed to drag myself agonizingly close to the tail end of the remnants of the bunch but on the slow downhill I probably lost all that distance again.

Finally I was confronted with the climb of Admirals road. Just put myself in the box and proceeded to climb past a mixture of B and C grade making most of them feel very ordinary to the point were one even commented I had wings as a danced up of the road. At this point I definitely didn’t feel like I had wings…. more like a couple of bricks in my pockets. I think I managed to pick off at least 10 people on the climb and finished in the big chainring and proceeded to feel rather toasted.

————

My weekend was pretty awesome. I rode out to Makara as part of my warm up and then stood in a registration queue for 15 minutes which wasn’t particularly helpful which left me with 10 minutes to sprint up and down the road to warm up again.

Senior Men started with Master 1 Men which has some rather fast people including Hisky. At the start heaps of people flew off up the road and I did my best to not over cook it to early which I have a bad habit of doing. Ended up riding a good portion of the early race with Hisky who looked a bit shocked that he was being beaten by quite a few people.

Once I settled in I just put it in the hurtbox and left it there for the rest of the race as I had no idea which category the people in font of me where in. Managed to reel in quite a few people over the course of the race. We climbed Aratihi twice and the second time up was probably one of my fastest ascents ever.

At prize giving it came to the senior men category and they called up someone who I passed right near the start of the race. At this point I was like “hang on I must be on the podium, sweet!”. Turns out I was on the top step. First race and ride in my jersey and I celebrated with a win :D. Feels great to win a race, the last thing I won was a few years ago and there was only one other person in my category and it was their first race.

Thanks for the picture Shane

————

Awesome work Cam!!

To get away over the Easter weekend Erin and I headed over for pizza at Cockoo and a night in Greytown. I took my Salsa La Cruz cyclocross bike for some gravel road riding while Erin browsed the shops on Sunday morning.

I left Greytown and headed west towards the Waiohine gorge – I’d driven up the paved road on the north side of the gorge but the map showed a gravel road on the south side which I wanted to explore. Only a couple of kms out of Greytown the road turned to gravel.

Gravel road ahead – just west of Greytown

Heading into the hills the road climbed gently and gave some amazing views of both the Waiohine river and the Waiarapa planes.

View south towards the Waiarapa

View north of the Waiohine

The views really were astonishing and I snapped quite a few photos as I climbed up into the hills. The road got narrower and rougher until finally finishing in a farm paddock – time for another couple of photos before turning around.

Paddock at the end of the road - turnaround time.

Riding quickly on gravel is one of life’s greatest thrills, so with the road gently pointing down the valley I gave it a bit of stick and got the speedo up to 50kph :-) I only stopped once on the way back down the valley to snap a final picture of the view and of the Salsa.

View of the speedy descent

I headed back down to the valley floor and after consulting the map decided to take the gravel road through Woodside and Fernside to Featherston. According to my map the road went all the way though however the map maker neglected to metion there is no bridge across the river. Not to worry as the water wasn’t too deep but I suspect it was fresh run-off from the snow on the Tararua’s as it was freezing! Note to self: Carbon-soled road shoes make crappy hiking boots.

Heading towards Fernside

Cold water!

Across the river I faced a maze of farm paddocks and electric fences’ to get back to the gravel road. I only got zapped once :-)

From Fernside it was a few more kms of dirt road before arriving into Featherston and heading north along the main road back to Greytown. I snapped one final pic while riding which shows the Waiohine gorge in the center of the frame. After a quick shower Erin and I drove to Lake Ferry for fish and chips (and a beer) by the ocean before heading back to Wellington. A perfect weekend away.

Waiohine gorge (in the middle of the frame) from the State Highway
