Daniels DuraAce 7700 hubs laced to Mavic Reflex tubular rims

These classic DuraAce 7700 hubs were sent down by Daniel to be laced to a new pair of Mavic Reflex tubular rims with the CD finish.

I used silver DT Swiss Competition spokes and brass nipples to stick with the classic theme.

I also supplied a new pair of Continental Sprinter tubulars and gave each one a squirt of Stan’s sealant to help prevent the inevitable.

These wheels are going to look awesome on the steel Look Daniel is restoring.

Nicola’s 1303 gram white DT Swiss hubs and Stans Alpha340 rims

Nicola wanted a new pair of wheels for a new custom bike.  Nicola is very light so the ideal wheelset would also be light, quick and responsive.

I used the Stan’s Alpha 340 rims which are well suited to this type of wheel.  I laced the front wheel with 24 DT Swiss Revolution spokes and the rear with 28 of the same.  All spoke nipples are aluminium.

DT Swiss 240s hubs are light but have excellent durability and are simple, fit-and-forget hubs.  In a custom pearl white they look great.

1303 gram actual weight is extremely light and these wheels will be a joy to ride.

Peter’s track front wheel

I built a matching rear wheel for this fixie conversion a few months ago but I can’t find any photos! These track hubs are great value and last really well. The all silver look is classic, and this wheel will last a long time.

John’s ELF and Powertap laced to A23

John wanted a pair of all-around wheels with a PowerTap rear hub while keeping low weight and great ride quality.

I suggested the A23 rims which are 23mm wide and do a great job of increasing comfort and traction.

The front hub is a 20 hole Alchemy ELF.  At 66 grams there are not too many lighter hubs out there, and certainly none with great bearing durability like the ELF.  The silver hub with red decals looks very Vodafone McClaren and with the wide rims they’ll be as quick as Hamilton but as smooth as Jensey.

The rear hub is the PowerTap Pro+. This is the middle of the line PowerTap and offers the best value for money.

Spokes are bladed DT Swiss Aerolites. The front is laced radially while the rear is 2x on the driveside, and 3x on the non-drive. This lacing pattern helps increase the non-driveside spoke tension which is important with the flange spacing of the PowerTap.

At 1679 grams these wheels are around the same weight as most companies high-end offerings, yet they also have the ability to measure power and transmit to a Garmin without wires.

Stan’s HD hub for 142mm and other thru-axles

Stan’s have added a new hub to their lineup – the HD rear hub. This hub is offered in two variants: a 150mm version for DH bikes, and a 142 / 135mm for XC and trail bikes.

HD stands for ‘heavy duty’ and you can see by the thicker flanges and thicker disc tabs that there is extra material in the shell.

The 135mm hub can be converted to the following:

  • 10x135mm thru-axle
  • 10x135mm quick release
  • 12x135mm thru-axle
  • 12x142mm thru-axle

The freehub body is the same 30-point engagement as the non-HD hubs.  “3.30″ stands for “3 pawls, 30 engagement points” and most of the ZTR hub range is being converted to this naming scheme.   Flange spacing and diameters are the same between the HD and non-HD hubs.

There is a 52 gram weight penalty over the non-HD hubs.

These hubs are in stock now and I’ll be building the first wheelset with them either this afternoon or tomorrow morning.

Tad’s Hope Pro2 singlespeed hubs and Arch 29er rims

Tad wanted a capable set of 29er wheels for his Kona Unit.

We chose the Hope Pro2 hubs because he’s currently using a rigid fork but will upgrade to QR15 at some point in the future and the rear Hope hub is the best single-speed hub out there.  Plus they’re red.

Arch rims are often overlooked for their lighter Crest brothers but they’re a great rim and suit singlespeed use really well.

DT Swiss Competition spokes on the front wheel, and Revolution spokes on the rear.  Brass nipples all the way around.

William’s carbon tubulars with DT Swiss 240s hubs

William needed a pair of wheels for draft-legal triathlon racing as well as road racing. These ‘team issue’ 1300 gram, 50mm deep carbon tubulars on top-quality DT Swiss 240s hubs fit the bill perfectly.
